My Personal Development Plan.

To reach ones full potential or ultimate goal within life, whether that be in in your career or interests in-between you need a well organized structure put in place. This structure will detail the individual steps you have to take in order to reach your goals to ensure you have a path before you that you can work along. For instance, to become an Oscar winner you, which for the purposes of this blog is your big goal, you have to know where you currently are in the grand scale of things and have an outline of what must be done to work towards your goal.

For me, my dream is to have both feet within the film industry, primarily as a writer. Equally I would love to be an independent film maker alongside my brother and friend as this is something we have always aspired to do for years. Now I am under now illusion that achieving either of these will be straight forward and some would say that making a career our of writing and filmmaking is unlikely but I have put in place a personal development plan that shows how I intend to get to where I want to go. My Plan in steps:

1.  Buy a top of the range Camera equipment to instil the best quality in my work.
2. Use that equipment to continue to do film voluntary short documentaries and commercials for charities and other companies.
3. Use these videos as promotion for paid work as a freelancer.
4. Use the money I earn from freelancing to buy any upgrades in equipment and start collecting funds for our first film.
5. Make a high quality original short film to enter into film festivals.
6. If the film is successful we will use that acclaim and exposure to raise funds to make our first feature length film.
7. Make a feature length film that will hopefully set us on our way.

I am a disciplined and self-motivated young man who strives for nothing but the best in everything that I do. I am extremely dedicated in order to be a successful film maker, head of an upcoming media company (Trifella Media and Production), volunteer worker and a high standard athlete runner (training 7 days per week) whilst studying for my Media degree at the University of Bolton. I also consider myself a strong team player who has no problem following orders quickly and efficiently both in a group or individually. Regarding the future I have high aspirations for my future like most young men. I want to be successful in all that I do, for me that would mean working for a well-known Television company to be part of what millions of people see every day. For example, I would love to work for the BBC or ITV on one of their established programmes. Similarly as a scriptwriter my ultimate dream will be realised when a film written by me appears in cinemas nationwide or one of my many sitcom ideas gets picked up by again, a major television company.

Skills and Personal Qualities:

·         Time management – I have to be organised and have a clear structure to each week in order to manage being a full time student who travels to and from University for long days of lectures and organise enough time to not only complete my assignments and filming commitments but also train to be a successful athlete up to twice a day.

 

·         Leadership – I have experience as chairmen of my young enterprise group as well as a sports coach to primary school children throughout college. Both roles taught me how to organise people of varied ages and give clear instructions in a thorough but friendly manner. Leadership is a skill that comes naturally being a sports captain on both football and athletics teams in the past. Being a leader in and out of sport over the years has shown me how to succeed and that hard work is vital, as well as being surrounded by likeminded people who work together to form a happy team around me who feel confident and valued.

 

·         Communication Skills – I am a current student councillor for my second year University class that is both demanding and a role that is full of rewards from a personal perspective. This has allowed me to become a strong listener and give advice from a professional standpoint and personal experience.  Speaking to members of staff on behalf of the students and reading out notices in a full lecture room is another positive from my role as student councillor.

 

·         Strong work ethic – I have a strong work ethic to give me the best choices and chances in life. It has not always been that way but now I know what I want to do as a career I work harder and harder day after day. My university studies requires a lot of patience to say the least but also what seems like endless hours to make sure it’s of the highest quality, I put the work in so I fully expect to get a worthwhile degree that I deserve at the end of my 3 years at Bolton.  It is not easy but I have to work hard to reach my goals, this means meeting assignment deadlines by working hours on end, running daily, training hard on the track, reading large textbooks for hours and putting my all into the important activities in my life.

·         Script Writing – I like to write short comedy scripts in my spare time as well as feature films/short films. I have also written two comedy stage shows that have been performed in theatres.

Writing is what I love to do!

I'm an avid writer, its my passion. Well I say passion but really it is something I like to do, mostly as part of my University course but I am currently in the Jake versus Jake episode of wanting to write in my spare time but haven't the time. One might argue that there is always time to write but for my personally i have to be in a certain mood and this mood is hard to find Into to mention stay in this state of mood. Ill be walking, running, sitting down, lying down when I'm not sleeping like a head vampire and ill find this powerful urge to write down the adventures and characters that are being created in my own mind with no warning or trigger. It just happens. Only a lot of the time I'm in a time or moment where i have no access to a pen or paper and no thick toilet role isn't accessible in public toilets. This happens to me regularly, most days id say, no no wait, this happens to me everyday. I'll be ready to write, ill have the motivation and drive a unpredictable guy like myself needs to work to his highest potential of written magic but all of a sudden that mood fizzles out as quickly as it came.

ts a shame, oh its a real shame alright because I'm not simply one of these word creatures that can sit down with turtle shell glasses and write automatically, no sprinkle fingers, no song, no build up, no nothing. They choose their method of writing, this often depends on hunger levels and blurry vision levels, then they are off. They start their work, go through the emotions, use fake tears when necessary and finish before anyone got suspicious.

I AM NOT ONE OF THESE PEOPLE.

I want to write but at the times I'm too busy or uninspired to write. When the times comes and I'm in the right place that is when my low level talent for writing comes to the fore. Ill be in my room and the laptop will be on and as the stardust falls I will find myself typing out the original or wacky ideas that have been good enough to stay in my memory dam. 'Superb darling', I say to myself whilst I fold one leg over the other and sip my coffee from my big-bigger mug, (From Disneyland) a place me and my brother christened Disneyland Auschwitz.

Despite my the lack of motivation that often acts as the monkey complete with a nappy, on my  back, when I do get going the results are more than compelling. From my style of writing, otherwise known as my consciousness leaking onto a piece of paper, I create a script, a world, a weird and bumpy ride like no other. My full out intention when ready to write a script is to delve into the unknown, an unknown that has the ability to unnerve readers  or take them to a place they are not familiar with. Do not for one second assume I set out to write with a purpose of offending my audience, this is not going to get the acclaim I want and its definitely not going to share the pleasure from which I personally get from my creations.

I write to give a spectacle of the abnormal, whether it be characters that we think we know to begin with then all of a sudden they do things or act in a way not commonly associated with people of that culture or age. A good example of this is in my latest script, 'Vanilla Vogue', chronicling the troubles encountered by a six year old girl named Leaf and 12 year old best friend Kadie. We all have relatives a similar age to these girls, be it a sister, daughter or niece, but my six and twelve year olds are like no other in nature or nurture. I specifically wrote them in an original way to shock readers, I decided to do this to create a pair of characters that we are not used to, in turn grabbing hold of the attention of whoever reads my script. Controversy may arise following the  actions of the girls, particularly the kiss they share, the acts of prostitution not to mention the Amish group who kidnap them and the deformed admirer of there's, Pluto.

 Following the first reading of Vanilla Vogue I got the exact reaction I wanted but a barrage of comments I didn't welcome. The majority consensus was one of confusion but there were laugh out loads aplenty from the first page to the last. The story was hard to follow judging by the feedback but I like to push the storyline to the background, its secondary to me,  to allow more time for character development. The one person who did understand the plot and followed explained it to the others proved that there was a story some where behind all the confusion but it didn't help the descriptions such as 'It was a selection of scenes that weren't going anywhere' and 'It was joke after joke without a point'. Not all scripts have universal praise, I accepted the more negative criticisms and soaked up the positive feedback, smiling with pride.

The laughs I heard roar through the room is why I right. For that forty minutes of reading through my script I took we all got transported to an alternative reality, a reality that we have not experienced before. However crazy it may be it has what it has enough madness and confusion that makes you want to read and seek answers to what you do not understand. If I write a script that gets a reaction, negative or positive and at the same time a script that keeps the readers in my new world, who read to the end albeit because of pure curiosity then I have been a success.
